Forget the past, go outside, have a blast are words that, at one point in the 90s, had as much impact around the world as Timothy Leary's famous expression: Turn on, tune in, drop out. Its author is the American Ithaka Darin Pappas. The song was called 'So Get Up' and became, at that time, a true anthem for dance music fans.

a life full of sorrow and happiness.

Twenty years ago today you began to hear
something other than muffled sounds and
the sound of your mother’s heartbeat. You
heard yourself cry for the first time
...you heard others cry too.

You heard electronic devices and doors
opening and closing and a lot of voices,
some melodic, others harsh and ugly.

You have lost and found so much since that day,
but do no feel much smarter or wiser than you did then.
You feel absolutely childlike,  Absolutely childlike,
naive without experience.

But ironically, you are completely ready to handle any
success or failure the future will bring. Both of
which you’ve been avoiding like death itself

No more false expectations. No more lying to yourself.
No more waiting for life to begin. No more waiting
for things to be perfect, you know they never will be.

...you know they never will be.

Notes:

I wrote this poem, SO GET UP
[aka: the end of the earth is upon us]
in 1993 in the amoreiras area of Lisbon for my daily segment of the program "Bairro Quatro" on Antena 1 - Radio Commercial Portugal. Later in 1994 I rerecorded it in participation with underground sound of lisbon (I was never a member of that project).

Of the 100+ mixes / usages of this poem (and my voice) on musical releases around the world, I have authorized only three.
