O los Años portugueses de Ithaka

El artista multidisciplinario greco-estadounidense Ithaka, también conocido como Ithaka Darin Pappas, vivió en Portugal de 1992 a 1998. Allí trabajó en diversos ámbitos de la expresión cultural. Durante sus seis años en el país, íthaka fotografió más de quince portadas de álbumes para artistas musicales portugueses y presentó cinco exposiciones individuales de su obra en galerías nacionales, incluyendo los proyectos fotográfico "Umbilicus" y el proyecto escultórico "Reincarnated Boards". Además, escribió y publicó una colección de relatos y poemas  Durante este período, Ithaka también compuso y grabó más de cuarenta canciones, tanto como artista invitado en álbumes de bandas portuguesas de rock y hip hop como para sus propios álbumes premiados: como "Flowers and the Color of Paint". Entre estas obras se encuentra la canción de hip hop "Escape From The City of Angels" (con Marta Dias), que formó parte de la banda sonora de la aclamada película "The Replacement Killers", del reconocido director de Hollywood Antoine Fuqua. Además, creó e interpretó el poema "So Get Up". La versión a capela de "So Get Up", escrita por primera vez el 13 de diciembre de 1992 y recitada en directo esa misma mañana en Rádio Comercial 97.4 FM Lisboa, es reconocida mundialmente como el artista plástico, escritor, poeta, vocalista, rapero, fotógrafo de la historia de la música. Las más de mil cien remezclas de esta obra literaria incluyen versiones de gigantes de la música electrónica como Armin Van Buuren, Dave Guetta, Carl Cox, Don Diablo, Fatboy Slim y otros, ¡lo que ha acumulado más de seiscientos millones de reproducciones en todo el mundo! En los artículos biográficos sobre la producción creativa del artista, el período de 1992 a 1998 se conoce colectivamente como “O los Años portugueses de Ithaka”.

Ithaka (leia-se Ítaca) é um músico e artista californiano, nascido na parte sul do estado (de ascendência grega). Ele também viveu em Japão, Grécia,Portugal e Brasil.

O músico, artista plástico, escritor, fotógrafo e surfista, Ithaka, começou a fotografar regularmente com apenas cinco anos – publicou sua primeira foto com 17. Por alguns anos, sustentou-se inteiramente com a fotografia, mas depois passou a desviar suas atenções para outras áreas de expressão, como escultura e música, apesar de a fotografia nunca ter saído de sua vida. A fotografia apenas se incorporou nessas outras atividades. “Um dos maiores projetos da minha vida tem sido a contínua série de esculturas The Reincarnation Of A Surfboard ou Pranchas Reencarnadas. São esculturas contemporâneas criadas exclusivamente a partir de pranchas de surf recicladas”, diz o californiano. Ithaka conta também que a fotografia sempre continuou ao lado desse trabalho, como parte das exposições. Mas, como afirma, “não apenas para mostrar como são as esculturas, e sim como um trabalho separado”. Ele vive no Brasil atualmente, onde gravou seu últimos dois álbuns, Recorded In Rio e Saltwater Nomad.

Multifacetado, multiartista, polivalente são várias as definições encontradas para este artista extremamente original, que norteia sua vida no prazer que sente no contato com o oceano. Para ele, uma boa definição para si é a de comunicador áudio-visual – que vive simplesmente para criar e comunicar. A mensagem transmitida em sua obra pode ser facilmente captada ao observar seu estilo de vida.

Aos 16 anos, pintava elementos do mar em qualquer coisa que via pela frente. Seis anos depois, após encontrar uma prancha sua quebrada, resolveu pintá-la e alterou completamente sua forma utilizando um serrote. “A partir daí, nunca mais pintei numa tela ou peça de madeira. As pranchas personalizaram minha arte”. Desde então, usa ferramentas simples como serrote e lixa, tinta acrílica e pó de madrepérola para transformar shapes em obras de arte. “Experimento materiais e tenho meus segredos. Mas, o primeiro passo sempre é consertar a prancha e prepará-la para receber os produtos”.

Reconhecido internacionalmente, já transformou mais de 200 pranchas. Ithaka participou de exposições na Europa, Brasil, Japão e Estados Unidos e acaba de lançar a série “Jurema”, produzida sob forte influência da flora brasileira, em que mistura aos blocos, galhos quebrados e sementes. “Deixei a forma da prancha natural e usei detalhes orgânicos. É uma série baseada na natureza”, especifica.

Darin Pappas, (born: July 8th 1966), better known by his pseudonym Ithaka is an American hip hop artist, sculptor,artistic photographer, writer, poet, record producer and surfer, of partial Greek descent. He is sometimes referred to by his original family name; Pappagiannis – in Greek: Παππαγιάννης, or the alternative spellings Pappayounis or Pappayannis. Note: name was legally changed to Ithaka Darin Pappas in January 2000.

Ithaka was born and raised in Southern California, but later established himself in Japan, Greece, Portugal and Brazil(where the artist currently resides).

In 1994, the international hit “So Get Up” that Ithaka wrote the lyrics for and vocalized (in participation with Underground Sound Of Lisbon) was nominated for “Song Of The Year” at that year’s Blitz Awards, and later climbed to 8th Place on Billboard’s U.K. Independent Dance Charts (and 52nd on Billboard’s U.S. independent Dance Charts).

In addition to creating music, his short story series entitled, Fishdaddy Chronicles, has appeared in surfing magazines around the world including Surfer (magazine),The Surfer’s Journal, Water and Transworld Surf”.^[4] In 2009, his short story “Miracle At Malibu” was published in the book entitled Surf Story, a collective volume of stories and surf culture compiled by Robb Havassy.^[5]

His abstract photographic art and body of sculpture work known as The Reincarnation Of A Surfboard have been exhibited globally, his most recent solo showings were hosted by The Camp in Costa Mesa, California in June 2010,^[6] Gallery Alma Do Mar in São Paulo, Brazil in October 2010, WOA-Way Of Arts in Lisbon, Portugal in December 2012 .^[7] and Hurley International in Orange County, California in October 2013.

At present the artist creates most of his musical, photographic and sculptural works at Recanto Akahti, his small ranch in rural South America located on the edge of the Atlantic Forest in AkahtiLândia, Brazil.^[8]

Ithaka borrowed his pseudonym specifically from the title of the poem “Ithaca” by the Greek poet, Constantine P. Cavafy, which in short summarizes that a journey is more important than the destination, that enjoyment of the journey of life, and the increasing maturity of the soul as that journey continues, are all the traveler can ask for. The poem, Ithaka has stated publicly, has served as a kind of life guide for the artist since he was in his early twenties. It should be noted that Cafavy’s poem itself was inspired by the Homeric return journey of Odysseus to his home Ithaca_(Island), as depicted in the Odyssey, even further connecting the artist Ithaka to his Greek ancestry.

Ithaka

                 

Born in California, multi-faceted visual artist, global wanderer and naturalist, Ithaka, first began experimenting with photography at the age of 5. By his late-teens, he was doing freelance magazine assignments for publications such as Thrasher Skateboarding.

During his early twenties he found regular work as a photographer in the West Coast music industry photographing hip hop artists such as NWA (Dr. Dre, Ice Cube, Eazy E). Also during this period, living in Los Angeles, he began sculpting - primarily using discarded surfboards as his raw material of choice.

His own search for self-expression gradually distanced him from the more commercial applications of photographic work and he began exhibiting both his personal photographs and sculptures (often together) and began traveling extensively.

During the 90's, he relocated several times: Athens (six months), Tokyo (one year), Lisbon (six years) and in 2001 visited Brazil for the first time. Where, for a decade, he has divided his time between Southern California and a rural part of the state of São Paulo. And finally after more than half a year in Mexico, he has finally returned to reside in Southern California

As both a life-long surfer and a connoisseur of urban culture, Ithaka has long had an inner-conflict of city vs. nature. His influences have often been divided between the two worlds, but it's been there in Brazil his love for the wilderness has grown substantially. His new found passion for the jungle, and all of its mysteries, has become the dominant influence in all aspects of his visual work.
