El artista multidisciplinario greco-estadounidense Ithaka, también conocido como Ithaka Darin Pappas, vivió en Portugal de 1992 a 1998. Allí trabajó en diversos ámbitos de la expresión cultural. Durante sus seis años en el país, íthaka fotografió más de quince portadas de álbumes para artistas musicales portugueses y presentó cinco exposiciones individuales de su obra en galerías nacionales, incluyendo los proyectos fotográfico "Umbilicus" y el proyecto escultórico "Reincarnated Boards". Además, escribió y publicó una colección de relatos y poemas Durante este período, Ithaka también compuso y grabó más de cuarenta canciones, tanto como artista invitado en álbumes de bandas portuguesas de rock y hip hop como para sus propios álbumes premiados: como "Flowers and the Color of Paint". Entre estas obras se encuentra la canción de hip hop "Escape From The City of Angels" (con Marta Dias), que formó parte de la banda sonora de la aclamada película "The Replacement Killers", del reconocido director de Hollywood Antoine Fuqua. Además, creó e interpretó el poema "So Get Up". La versión a capela de "So Get Up", escrita por primera vez el 13 de diciembre de 1992 y recitada en directo esa misma mañana en Rádio Comercial 97.4 FM Lisboa, es reconocida mundialmente como el artista plástico, escritor, poeta, vocalista, rapero, fotógrafo de la historia de la música. ITHAKA DARIN PAPPAS ERA EL SURFISTA AZUL. Era un tipo duro y empedernido de Los Ángeles que se mudó a Lisboa para empezar de nuevo su vida. Decía que las olas lo habían traído. Ithaka solo vestía de azul. Nunca de otro color. El mismo tono de azul, por todas partes. Era algo que lo cubría todo el cuerpo. Su apartamento: todo azul. Paredes, techos, nevera: todo del mismo azul. Sus obras de arte... el mismo tono de azul. Tenía una enorme "cruz" en la cocina hecha con dos tablas de surf azules. Zapatos pintados de azul, algunos con aletas, estaban en la puerta de su casa. Fotos azules de ombligos cubrían las paredes. Azul, decía, era el color de su sangre. Y un poco de su sangre cuelga en mi pared. Sin contactos en tierra, Ithaka compró un billete de ida para su vigésimo sexto cumpleaños y simplemente apareció. Me encantó su valentía. Allí estaba él, este surfista angelino que decidió hacer las maletas e irse a vivir a Portugal con un idioma completamente nuevo que aprender y una nueva pandilla que encontrar. No era el estereotipo del chico guapo, rubio y de ojos azules. Era un hombre de barrio. Un auténtico callejero. Deambulaba por las calles de Lisboa con sus amigos. Hablaba despacio. Vestía sudaderas con capucha y gorras de béisbol. Llevaba el pelo castaño oscuro recogido en una coleta y perilla. Con carisma y una especie de estilo urbano, proyectaba una confianza absoluta.
Ithaka se infiltró por completo en la comunidad artística lisboeta. Expuso su arte y consiguió que General D y Cool Hipnoise colaboraran en su CD Ithaka: Flowers and the Color of Paint. El sonido es una voz suave con un buen groove de fondo, con un toque de rap portugués. Es bueno. Ithaka era muy original, haciendo lo suyo. A la gente le gustaba.

No diría que fue una compra impulsiva. Algo en tener una tabla de surf (aunque no practico surf) me atraía. Tenía que comprar una de sus piezas de la serie "La reencarnación de la tabla de surf". Ithaka tomó tablas de surf viejas con la parte trasera rota y las convirtió en esculturas. Claro que eran azules, y esta estaba cubierta de piel sintética azul. Medía unos dos metros de alto, con formas recortadas en el centro que la hacían parecer el ala de una mosca azul peluda. Me dijo que podía peinarla como quisiera, pero que necesitaría mucho "no más lágrimas" de Johnson antes de intentarlo. Y lo más importante, tenía que llevarla a casa entera. Así que allí estaba yo, caminando por las estrechas calles adoquinadas de Barrio Alto con una tabla de surf azul peluda que era más alta que yo. Riendo todo el camino, mi camarógrafo, Steve Gelder, me ayudó a cargarla hasta que vimos un taxi. Ese fue el comienzo de un interesante viaje de regreso a casa. Sin rechistar, el taxista nos permitió meterlo en el maletero con la aleta asomando por detrás. Supongo que ya estaba acostumbrado, pues era conductor en Lisboa. Llegamos al hotel, sorprendentemente sin un rasguño. Después, tuvimos que afrontar el aeropuerto. En la facturación me dieron un par de bolsas largas de plástico transparente y cinta adhesiva. Lo marqué como FRÁGIL y crucé los dedos. (¡Ni siquiera me cobraron por el equipaje extra!). Para entonces, se había convertido en mi nuevo amigo y habría sido un desastre si no hubiera sobrevivido. El Reencarnación cruzó el océano, el mismo océano que cruzó Ítaca, y ahora cuelga con orgullo en mi casa. Siempre me hace sonreír.

OS PERSONAGENS
Hilton Alves é um brasileiro que escolheu o Havaí para viver
e conquistou seu espaço na Meca do surfe, onde tem uma fundação para crianças,
a Surf Art Kids. Dono de painéis como os do mundial de SUP, ele deu inicio à um
projeto ambicioso em 2013: assinar 101 murais de surfe pelo mundo. O maior
deles é o 1º, feito recentemente em Honolulu: foram 8 dias e 150 galões de tintas para cobrir
uma área de quase cinco andares de altura por 200 metros de largura. O
segundo mural foi pintado no início de 2014 em um evento no parque paulista do
Ibirapuera, com grande repercussão na midia.

Do outro lado está um californiano apaixonado pelo Brasil.
Durante boa parte do ano, Ithaka Darin Pappas se esconde entre a Mata Atlântica e
o mar no litoral paulista dando vida nova ao lixo no projeto “Pranchas
Reencarnadas”. Além de artista plástico reconhecido internacionalmente, Ithaka
é poeta, fotógrafo, surfista de alma e músico - e tem no seu refúgio brasileiro
um universo bem particular.

O greco-americano Ithaka Darin Pappas participou em "So
Get Up" dos USL e assinou o album, "Flowers And The Color Of
Paint". Estão certamente entre os projectos mais fortes da música de dança
feita em Portugal nos anos 90s. Entretanto, Ithaka viajou pelos Estados Unidos
e o seu nome ficou um pouco esquecido. Até agora quando regressa a Lisboa para
pôr em causa as sua antigas ligações.
Pappas "versus"
USL-Kaos
Ithaka Darin Pappas passou alguns meses em Los Angeles,
cidade de onde é natural e onde fez algums contactos para conseguir um
"manager" e um advogado. "Fui aos Estados Unidos porque havia
uma séria de problemas a resolver aqui. Um deles foi que fiz un disco em 1994
com os Underground Sound of Lisbon [USL] e, quando o gravámos, foi uma coisa
entre amigos, estavamos a fazer arte em conjunto e foi uma coisa boa. Fiz um
acordo verbal com eles segundo o qual receberia 25 mil escudos (approx. 120 €) por mil discos que fossem lançados em Portugal. Nunca se falou de
contratos nem de distribuição no estangeiro."
Desde então, "So Get Up" – que era
originalmente o lado B do maxi que tería por tema principal "Dance With
Me" – fez furor nos Estados Unidos, para onde o disco foi enviado,
transformando os USL, de que fazem parte Rua da Silva (Doctor J) e Tó Pereira
(DJ Vibe), no projecto de "dance music" nacional mais aclamado a
nivel internacional.
"O tema entrou para as 'charts' e foi
lançado em muitos paises, mas eles não reconheceram a minha participação.
Apesar de muitas das remisturas que foram feitas – principalmente as de Danny
Tenaglia e Junior Vasquez, as mais populares- practicamente só reterem as
minhas palavras e a minha voz. Nessa ponto é questionável quem é realmente o
artista. É o Ithaka? Ou são os USL? Quando se 'descartaa a musica original e
faz outra é questionável. É que não sou membro dos USL….?", diz Ithaka. E
acrescento: "Pode perguntar-se a quem se quiser, nos Estados Unidos ou em
Portugal, o que é que indentifica a canção: são as palavras. Neste tipo de
música, que há numeras versões diferentes, a etiqueta são as palavras. A canção
é o poema."
Dai que Ithaka reclame direitos de
interpretação – "royalties", uma vez que os direitos de autor lhe
pertencem por direito – sobre os lucros com "So Get Up". É que o
poema a que Ithaka dá voz no "intro" do tema tinha sido escrito seis
meses antes de ser convidado para juntar-se aos USL, depois de estes o terem
ouvido numa emissão do programa Quatro Bairro, da Rádio Comerical. Segundo
António Cunha, da Kaos, editora dos USL – e depois de o PÚBLICO ter marcada uma
entrevista com Rui da Silva que acabou por não acontecer-, "o que passa é
a vlha história de negócio da música: quando as coisas têm sucesso há sempre
alguema tentar aproveitar-se".

They are certainly among the strongest dance music projects made in Portugal in the 90s. Meanwhile, Ithaka traveled through the United States and his name was somewhat forgotten. Until now, when he returns to Lisbon to question his old connections. Pappas "versus" USL-Kaos Ithaka Darin Pappas spent some months in Los Angeles, the city where he is from, and where he made some contacts to get a manager and a lawyer. "I went to the United States because there were a number of problems to solve here. One of them was that I made a record in 1994 with Underground Sound of Lisbon [USL], and when we recorded it, it was a thing between friends, we were making art together and it was a good thing. I made a verbal agreement with them according to which I would receive 25,000 escudos (approx. €120) for every thousand records released in Portugal. There was never any talk of contracts or distribution abroad." Since then, "So Get Up" – which was originally the B-side of the maxi-single whose main track would be "Dance With Me" – has been a sensation in the United States, where the record was sent, transforming USL, which includes Rua da Silva (Doctor J) and Tó Pereira (DJ Vibe), into the most internationally acclaimed national "dance music" project. "The song entered the charts and was released in many countries, but they didn't acknowledge my participation. Despite many of the remixes that were made – mainly those by Danny Tenaglia and Junior Vasquez, the most popular – practically only retaining my words and my voice. At that point, it's questionable who the real artist is. Is it Ithaka? Or is it USL? When you 'discard' the original music and make another one, it's questionable. I'm not a member of USL…," says Ithaka. And I add: "You can ask anyone you want, in the United States or Portugal, what identifies the song: it's the words. In this type of music, which has numerous different versions, the label is the words. The song is the poem." That's why Ithaka claims performance rights – "royalties," since the copyright belongs to him by right – on the profits from "So Get Up." The poem that Ithaka sings in the song's "intro" was written six months before he was invited to join USL, after they heard him on a broadcast of the program Quatro Bairro, on Rádio Comercial. According to António Cunha, from Kaos, USL's publisher – and after PÚBLICO scheduled an interview with Rui da Silva that ended up not happening – "what's happening is the old story of the music business: when things are successful, there's always someone trying to take advantage."
In
early, 2017, Los Angeles-based independent music label, Sweatlodge
Records will release the seventh album by the Californian songwriter,
Ithaka, entitled, So Get Up & The Lost Acapellas. The record will
include thirteen of Ithaka's vocalized poems (without music), many of
which were written during 1992 and 1993, two of the six years that the
artist lived in Lisbon. Also, as a bonus track, the original 1993
demo-version of So Get Up will appear.
There
in Portugal, Ithaka was regularly recited his texts and rhymes for the
daily radio program, Quatro Bairro on the national station, Rádio
Comerical. Ten of the poems offered on the Lost Acapellas release were
written and recorded specifically for the radio program and later (in
mid-1993) were rerecorded as voice-over and musical demos on a visit to
England. These recordings, were missing for 23 years until recently
being discovered in a Los Angeles storage unit on a antiquated cassette
tape.
Among these early acapella poems is So
Get Up, most recently re-popularized by Armin Van Buuren and Cosmic
Gate, which today (twenty-four years and more than a thousand releases
and adaptions later) is considered The Most Remixed Vocal Acapella In
Musical History (by Guinness World Records - 2016, 2017).
Ithaka
first wrote So Get Up in a small cafe in Amoeira near Rádio Comerical
about an hour before going on air with it for his slot on Quatro Bairro,
unfortunately this very first recording has never been recovered. He
did however, as mentioned, record it a second time in the U.K - to
present to radio producers and possibly record companies.
There
working at Rádio Comerical, Ithaka met DJ Vibe (Portugal's most
prominent DJ), who played an hour of progressive house music immediately
following Ithaka's segments. There Vibe usually heard the end of
Ithaka's vocal sequences and was intrigued by the poems. Some months
later, he invited him to participate as a guest vocalist on the first
release by Underground Sound Of Lisbon (a progressive house duo
consisting of Vibe and Rui Da Silva) for Kaos Records.
They
recorded Ithaka's vocal in the early hours of a rainy winter night at
the garage studio, 1 Só Céu, owned by the Portuguese rock band called,
Os Delfins.
Ithaka was told by Kaos (a micro label at
the time) that they would make 200 white-labels vinyls for distribution
within Portugal only. They paid him $70 dollars for his participation,
with a verbal promise to discuss any future distributions and
manufacturing that would possibly follow. And weeks later, from just
that single white-label distribution, the song exploded into an almost
instantaneous national dance floor classic.
Although
open-minded musically, Ithaka was more associated with hip hop, surfing
and contemporary art more than dance music and only infrequently
appeared at the clubs his apocalyptic poem had literally become an
anthem for an entire generation of club goers, inspiring even people who
never liked dance music to get involved.
Ironically,
Kaos Records and Underground Sound Of Lisbon themselves never made a
point of explaining who the mystery prophet was and nobody seemed to
ask, the press included - even though Ithaka was indeed the actual
performer and owned 50% of the publishing.
"I
remember specifically on a couple of occasions trying to get into
Lisbon-area night clubs, which was always a chore because of the wait to
get in, and there in line, two different times during height of the
song's first wave of popularity, I could hear So Get Up playing on the
dance floor...The first was at Frágil in Bairro Alto - and I said to the
snob at the door, hey man, that's me, my voice...let me in. And the
doorman said, if that was you...I would know who you are AND I DON'T! -
And the other time, a few months later, was at ALCÂNTARA, when I again
declared that that was my voice with hundreds of people shouting the
lyrics on top of it muffled behind the thick curtains out the dance
floor..and that doorman said, Yes, my friend, and Elvis is still alive
too!
In late 1994, Ithaka left Portugal for
four months back to Los Angeles for an art exhibit - and during that
short amount of time, Kaos Records had licensed So Get Up, without
consulting him, to several international parties most notably Tribal
Records -USA, a sub-subsidiary of Miles Copeland's I.R.S. Records (EMI).
Although
Rob Di Stefano, the managing director of Tribal Records had met Ithaka
on a previous trip to Portugal, and obviously understood he was from
California and only temporarily residing in Portugal, he realized the
marketing potential of an exotic 100% Portuguese house music product
arriving in the U.S. for the first time and made no attempt to publicize
the vocalist's true origins. No featuring Ithaka credit was ever
included on any of the releases, even though he is both the author and
the vocalist. Yes, this is dance music, but no matter how good or bad
the production is, no one can deny that the vocal-poem and adjoining
hooks are the primal guts of the entire So Get Up experience. How else
could it possibly appeal to such a large musical spectrum of DJs and
producers?
The first 1994 release of So Get
Up on Tribal was a double-vinyl set with ten-mixes, including several
versions by New York superstars Junior Vasquez and Danny Tenaglia. The
early international popularity of So Get Up was undoubtfully manifested
by these interpretations by Vasquez and Tenaglia. Two New York all-stars
creating music around the words of a California hip hop wordsmith. To
call So Get Up, even at that point, a 100% Portuguese release, was
inaccurate at best. The first release by Tribal, which sold upwards of
50,000 copies, also included an uncredited acapella of Ithaka's raw poem
- which paved the way for a vast multitude of remixes and samplings
over a huge cross-section of electronic musical genres.
With
the exception of Stretch & Verne's legally licensed rerecord "Get
Up, Go Insane!" in 1997 (and subsequently Fatboy Slim's remix of that),
every other international release of So Get Up has essentially been
unauthorized. It is fair to say that every (of the more than a thousand
mixes released) house, trance, techno, electro, drum & bass, big
beat, dub step, and art rock versions - under their varying titles of
"So Get Up", "Get Up", "Forget The Past", "the End Of The Earth", "Have A
Blast", "Headcharge", "Hardaventure", etc. have been issued illegally.
No record royalties or performance royalties have ever been paid to the
vocalist/lyricist although all have been made using Ithaka's 1994
recording - made that late night way back when in Cascais, Portugal. By
the most recent estimates of Ithaka's publisher attempting to recoup his
writing shares, So Get Up in it's many incarnations has been either
sold or downloaded more than 30,000,000 times and approximately
250,000,000 have at least heard the poem. Whether payment ever falls
into the right hands, time will only tell.
Ithaka
himself has had an unusual career (and life) to say the least. He came
to recording not thru music itself, but via music photography, visual
arts....and reading books. For nearly three years, among his many other
sporadic occupations, Ithaka was the principal photographer for Priority
Records gangster rap icons, NWA and Eazy E , but that's a story for
another day.
In 1992, attempting to expand his
boundaries outside of the Southern California area, the half-Greek,
Ithaka Darin Pappas, set off soul-searching. He first relocated to
Athens for six months and then spent a year in Tokyo, finally landing in
Lisbon where he spent more than six years.
During this
six-year period in Portugal, Ithaka was hyper-productive. He recorded
So Get Up (and many other poems), made two award-winning hip hop albums,
published translated poems and short stories in Portuguese magazines -
and had several large scale sculpture exhibits of his work. He also
photographically documented much of the early and mid-nineties
Portuguese music scene, shooting record covers for rock, hip hop and EDM
projects.

No dia 23 de Novembro a partir das 19h no espaço WOA – Way of Arts, Cascais, poderás ver pranchas de surf como nunca as viste. Uma exposição espantosa saída da mente de Ithaka, mundialmente reconhecido como “The Reincarnation of a Surfboard”.
Tudo começou em 1989, em Orange County, CA, após uma viagem memorável de Ithaka num tubo de Newport Point. Uma bancada de areia com um pico triângular perfeito e tubular que, não tendo o desfecho final previsto, ou seja sair do tubo intacto, resultou numa prancha partida ao meio!
Após olhar para “os restos” inutilizáveis da prancha que pousavam pela sua casa durante algum tempo, Ithaka decidiu dar-lhe uma nova expressão e deixá-la viver na qualidade de escultura. Nasceu o projecto que ainda hoje dura é tem reconhecimento internacional: “The reincarnation of a surfboard”.
Começando por pintá-la para seguidamente lhe dar um novo shape, nasceu assim, nesse mesmo dia, a primeira prancha reencarnada, ao mesmo tempo que surgia um novo talento que passou a identificar Ithaka como, além de artista e surfista, escultor, hoje considerado por muitos como um icon do surf art mundial. Ithaka junta ainda a sua identidade de rapper, fotógrafo e escritor à sua obra.
Algumas das pranchas que escolheu para reencarnar surfaram ondas de 4 metros em G-Land ou Pipeline, estiveram em vários lugares do mundo e são agora esculturas que nos podem acompanhar e trazer uma nova energia às nossas vidas… Conforme verbaliza o artista em relação às pranchas que esculpe: “É um final feliz para a vida destes felizes objectos, criados pela magia que também existe no Homem.”

During his active years in Portugal, the artist's projects were nominated for a total of nine Blitz Awards (the Portuguese equivalent of The Grammy Awards) including; Best Album (for "Flowers And The Color Of Paint" in 1995 [2] and Stellafly in 1997) and Best Male Vocalist (in 1995 & 1997). In addition, the prestigious national newspaper, Publico awarded his 1997 release Stellafly as "Album Of The Year" and considered his most popular song from that record Seabra Is Mad as both the "Song Of The Year" and "Video Of The Year". In an end of the decade retrospective article about Portuguese music, Publico also cited his debut release "Flowers And The Color Of Paint" as one of the country's Ten Most Influential Albums Of The 1990's.
In 1994, the international hit "So Get Up" that Ithaka wrote the lyrics for and vocalized (in participation with Underground Sound Of Lisbon) was nominated for "Song Of The Year" at that year's Blitz Awards, and later climbed to 8th Place on Billboard's U.K. Independent Dance Charts (and 52nd on Billboard's U.S. independent Dance Charts).
In 1998, after over six years in Portugal, Ithaka returned back to California where he recorded his third album called Somewhere South Of Somalia with producer Conley Abrams III. The lyrics from this album were written on a two month journey into East Africa.[3] Later Ithaka relocated his base to Rio de Janeiro where he recorded two more albums, Recorded In Rio and Saltwater Nomad. In 2007, he briefly returned to Portugal to record with former Underground Sound of Lisbon member DJ Vibe, providing vocals and lyrics for the track "You".
O artista e surfista californiano Ithaka inaugurou no passado dia 23 de Novembro, na galeria Way Of Arts em Cascais, a sua “The Reincarnation of a Surfboard".Com novas peças e um novo olhar para pranchas abandonadas e partidas, o artista, que viveu em Portugal durante seis anos nos anos 90, deliciou o público e alegrou uma casa repleta para o receber de braços abertos. A SURFPortugal, parceira inevitável do Ithaka em Portugal, esteve na inauguração e não desperdiçou a oporunidade para falar com algumas pessoas presentes e fazer reportagem deste evento cultural.
