The TomasBlot Butterflies are a series of photographic art piecescreated by Californian artist, Ithaka (Ithaka Darin Pappas)in Lisbon, Portugal (1997) based upon symbols his father drew hours before passing away in 1991.

Californian-born lyricist/vocalist, photographer and surf culture artist, Ithaka,
with a sculpture entitled Viridi Nephrite from his 2015 exhibit Aliens Of AkahtiLândia [at F+ Gallery, Santa Ana] of the general body of work known as The Reincarnation Of A Surfboard (300+ wall-mounted recycled-surfboard sculptures that Ithaka has created from 1989-present day).

Ithaka is the writer and voice behind the legendary international club acapella "So Get Up" (remixed more than 1000 times) and also "Escape From The City Of Angels" from the Replacement Killers soundtrack.

Der chinessiche Philosoph Konfuzius sagte einmal, dass der weise Mann nicht zwiechen Arbeit und Hobby unterscheidet. Sein Hobby ist seine Arbeit, seine Arbeit seine Passion. Betrachtet man aus der Ferne mit welcher Leichtigkeit der Surfer und Kue¼nstler "Ithaka" (aka "Ithaka Darin Pappas") zwiechen den von ihm gewae¤hlten Ausdrucksformen Musik, Skulpturen, Literatur und Fotografie wechselt, so erscheint sein Leben wie eine Balanceakt zwichen einer Welt euphorischen Schaffens und "aquatischer" Leidenschaft.

"Ithakas" Wurzeln liegen in Süd-Kalifornien. Dem Land in dem nicht nur Milch und Honig fliesst sondern das auch reich an erstklassigen Riff- und Beach-breaks ist. So verbrachte der Hip-Hip Visionaer und visuelle Expressionist seine Jugend hauptsaechlich surfend zwichen "Los Angeles" und "Orange County".

Fuer die meisten Amerikaner mag Portugal als Ausgangspunkt einer internationalen Musiker-Karriere ein ungewoehnlicher Ort sein, fuer "Ithaka" nicht. Die Reisen, die Teil seiner Selbstfindung sind, haben ihn nicht nur beeinflusst, er ist ihr Produkt geworden. Auch wenn er sich nicht an jedem neuen Ort, den er erreicht, neu erfindet, so fuegt sich doch an jedem Zwichenpunkt seiner globalen Reise eine weitere "Schicht" an Erfahrungen und Eindrücken hinzu. Dies ist die Basis vieler seiner Songs, Kurzgeschichten sowie seiner visuellen Ausdrucksform. Aber obwohl "Ithaka" eine Personifizierung des in unseren Zeiten so oft beschworenen "Weltbuergers" ist, ist er einer der ersten der dir erzaehlen wird, das es nicht noetig ist weit zu reisen um "wegzukommen", Zitat:

Es hat alles mit Wahrnehmung zu tun.

Wie du deine Umgebung betrachtest.

Wie du sie absorbierst.

Einige der weisesten,

und interessantesten Menschen

die ich je kennengelernte

haben nie ihren Geburtsort verlassen.

Es geht einzig darum Routine zu durchbrechen.

  

Und "Routine durchbrechen" kann er. Im Unterschied zu seinem letzten Audiowerk "Recorded in Rio" (2004), einem mit "Live-Instrumenten" arrangierten Hip-Hop Album dominieren auf seiner aktuellen CD "Saltwater Nomad" die elektronischen Klaenge. Dieses in Brasilien, "Ithakas" aktuellem Wohnsitz, von Tito Gomes produzierte Album besticht mit minimalistischen, teilweise hypnotischen Hip-Hop Arrangements.

Obwohl sein Stil manchmal mit Everlast, Massive Attack und dem "spaeten Tupac" verglichen wird, haben seine Lieder oft eine eine "sphärische Nuance". Wer stereotyp Texte im "Gangsta Style" Hip Hop oder "Pimp Rap" erwartet, wird enteuscht werden. Zum Glueck. "Ithaka's" Musik ist eher sein persoenlicher Soundtrack. Erzaehlt werden autobiographische Geschichten ueber Spiritualitaet, Reisen, teuflische WG-Mitbewohner, die Liebe und natuerlich ueber die Passion seines Lebens, das Surfen, Zitat:

Das Verlangen nach exotischen Surfspots und die Sehnsucht nach fremden Kulturen schickte ihn dann sehr frueh auf eine Odyssee rund um unseren blauen Planeten. Es ist dieser Trip zwiechen entfernten Surf-Spots und dem pulsierenden Leben der Staedte die seinen Alben Ihren sehr eigenen Klang verleihen. Beides wird in seinen Songs mit natuerlicher Leichtigkeit fusioniert.

Nachdem er laengere Zeit u.a. in Griechenland (der Heimat seines Vaters) und Japan verbracht hatte, fuehrte ihn seine Reise 1992 nach Portugal, dass er mit nicht viel mehr als seinem Surfboard, einem Wetsuit und einem Fotoaparat im Gepäck erreichte. Portugal stellt fuer Ithaka eine besondere Station seiner Reise dar. Er surfte dort nicht nur die reiche Auswahl erstklassiger portugisicher Spots, schloss lebenslange Freundschaften sondern began dort auch seine Fotographien auszustellen, Kurzgeschichten zu veroeffentlichen und spaeter einen Musik-Kanal des portugisiechen Rundfunks zu moderieren. Als er neun Jahre spaeter Portugal wieder verliess hatte er zwei Studioalben und neun portugiesiche "Grammy" Nominierungen im Gepaeck.

Seine Musik wurde in mehreren Surf-Filmen verwendet (u.a. in "Timmy Turners Second Thougts", siehe Video weiter unten) war Teil des Video-Spiels  "NBA 2K7" und sein prämierter Song "Escape from the City of Angels" taucht  im Filmklassiker "The Replacement Killers" auf!

Músico, artista plástico, fotógrafo, escritor e surfista, Íthaka é um dos artistas mais completos da atualidade. De ascendência grega e nascido no sul do estado da Califórnia, também já morou em lugares como Japão, Portugal, Grécia e Brasil.

As pessoas se referem à ele como um multiartista, porém ele se auto define como comunicador audio-visual.

Alguns de seus sucessos já foram incluídos em filmes de surf e produções de Hollywood. Seu trabalho esteve presente em “Second Thoughts” – de Timmy Turner e Samba Trance & Rock n’Roll, do videomaker brasileiro Rafael Mellin, foi premiado e além disso, a música de Íthaka, Escape from the City of Angels, fez parte da soundtrack do filme Hollywoodiano Replacement Killers (Assassinos Subsitutos).

Suas esculturas “Pranchas Reencarnadas” são um diferencial na Surf Art, fazendo com que ele seja um destaque no que diz respeito à arte dentro da cultura surf, por ser um artista polivalente, atraindo assim um número máximo de admiradores do seu trabalho.

Para mim foi mais que um prazer e uma honra entrevistá-lo. Íthaka tem a simpatia brasileira, é acolhedor e muito educado, sua sensibilidade está presente em tudo o que faz, vamos conhecer um pouco mais desse artista super talentoso?

Você é músico, artista plástico, escritor, fotógrafo e surfista.  Que dom, dentre esses, se revelou primeiro em você?

Meu pai era um fotógrafo por hobby muito ambicioso. Sempre tínhamos câmeras pela casa e eu era muito curioso sobre elas, pelo que eu me lembro. Tirei minhas primeiras fotos com cinco anos de idade, numa viagem de barco para observar as baleias, na Califórnia. Eu publiquei minha primeira foto quando tinha 17 anos, era um anúncio de produtos de skate independente para a revista Trasher.

Existe alguma ordem de preferência? Ou você gosta de fazer tudo na mesma intensidade?

Amo todas essas expressões quase que igualmente – mas eu provavelmente morreria se não pudesse mais surfar, ainda que eu seja somente um free surfer amador, isso é precioso para mim.

Minha atividade varia, as vezes, dependendo de onde estou geograficamente,  muitas vezes estou em lugares diferentes, por isso não posso fazer certas coisas em qualquer lugar.

As esculturas são físico. Escrever é mental. A música é sentimento. E fotografar é algo que eu faço todos os dias – não importa que mais eu esteja fazendo, eu registro quase tudo.

Tudo que eu preciso para escrever e compor é papel e caneta. Para fazer as esculturas eu preciso de ferramentas, material e muito espaço (difícil de fazer se estiver viajando). Para gravar músicas, eu preciso de computadores, alguns equipamentos, etc.

De onde surgiu a inspiração, primeiro para o nome desse projeto “The Reincarnation of a Surfboard” (Pranchas reencarnadas) e depois, para o projeto em si?

Eu quebrei uma das minhas pranchas favoritas, num dia de ondas grandes em Newport Beach. No começo, eu só pintei essa prancha quebrada, depois comecei a mudar sua forma. Antes disso, eu nunca havia feito nada em 3D. As esculturas eram definitivamente um território novo para mim, mas estou fazendo-as desde então.

A razão pela qual eu chamei esse projeto “Pranchas Reencarnadas” foi porque, dentre outros objetos inanimados, a prancha tem uma vida muito privilegiada, porém curta. Ela viaja, surfa, se diverte no sol, mas não dura muito. Elas quebram ou apenas morrem. É meio triste de certa forma. Quando eu as transformo em arte contemporânea, é como se eu desse à prancha vida nova – uma reencarnação. Todas as vezes que vejo as esculturas que fiz das minhas pranchas, me lembro de ondas especiais. Eu surfei nelas, todas elas, como pranchas, elas trouxeram um pouco de alegria aos seus donos e eu espero que elas continuem a serem curtidas por aqueles que irão vê-las em forma de esculturas.

Existe sempre o registro de uma mensagem em cada trabalho seu?

A maioria está relacionada à algum tipo de história ou idéia, mas nem todas. Elas simplesmente “existem”.

Você conhece praticamente o mundo, de todos os lugares que você já surfou e visitou, existe algum que, de alguma forma especial, vai ficar para sempre marcado como o seu lugar preferido?

De todos os surfartists, cantores, escultores, escritores e músicos que você já conheceu, algum deles já te serviu como inspiração e quais foram eles?

Eu tenho muito respeito por muitas pessoas em todos esses meios de comunicação e, obviamente, como todos nós, estou impactado por tudo que tenho visto ou ouvido desde que nasci – mas, minhas influências especificamente nessas áreas em que estou participando não são de outros indivíduos que criam a mesma coisa. Minhas viagens, meus amigos e as ondas inspiraram a maioria das minhas músicas, da minha arte e dos meus escritos.

Quando eu era criança, li muitos escritores da Geração Beat, como Jack Keroauc, Ken Kasey, etc. Acho que meu amor por Hip Hop, de uma maneira abstrata, vem desses escritores e da maneira que eles escolheram “falar” em uma narrativa na primeira pessoa. Hip Hop também é escrito na primeira pessoa e parece funcionar relativamente bem com minhas histórias e meu tipo de voz.

O que siginifica o Mar para você? Qual é a sua ligação com ele?

É quase tudo para mim. Sou um grande fã do surf profissional e, em geral, sinto que é algo muito positivo, mas surfar é algo bem maior que isso para mim. É realmente um tipo de religião para muitos de nós. É um estilo de vida que existiria sem campeonatos, ou surfwears, ou revistas. Existem poucas maneiras de se interagir com a Natureza que cheguem perto de pegar um bom tubo, é quase como que ficar dentro da alma da Terra. Se você surfa no frio, na chuva e sozinho é quando você sabe que você realmente ama o Mar. E eu definitivamente amo.

My Dad was a very ambitious hobby photographer. There were always cameras around the house and I was very curious about them as long as I can remember.

I took my first pictures when I was about five years old on a whale-watching boat trip in California. I published my first picture when I was about seventeen, it was an ad for Independent skateboard products in Thrasher Magazine. I love all of these expressions almost equally – but I would probably die if I couldn’t continue to surf.

Even though I’m just an amateur free surfer, it’s THAT precious to me.

My activity sometimes varies depending on where I am geographically.

I’m often in different places so I can’t do certain things everywhere.

The sculptures are physical. The writing is mental. The music is just feeling. And photography is something I do everyday – no matter what else I am doing, I document almost everything. All I need to write or compose is paper and pen. To make sculptures I need tools, material and a lot of space (hard to do if I’m traveling).To program or record songs, I need good computers, some equipment etc.

It all started in about 1989, I was living in Hollywood at the time, photographing and doing some painting.

I broke one of my favorite boards one morning on a good-sized day in Newport Beach. At first I just painted on the broken board, then later starting changing the form. Before this time I’d never really done anything 3-dimensional before. Sculptures were definitely new territory for me, but I’ve been doing them ever since. The reason I call this project The Reincarnation Of A Surfboard (Pranchas Reencarnadas) is because, among other inanimate objects, a surfboard has a very privileged but short lifespan. It travels, surfs, has fun in the sun….but it doesn’t last long. They break …or just die. It’s kind of sad in a way. When I recreate them into contemporary art, it’s like giving the board a new life – a reincarnation.Whenever I see the sculptures I have made from my own boards, I can remember special waves I’ve ridden on them. All of these pieces, as surfboards, have brought a little bit of happiness to their owners. And I hope they will continue to be enjoyable to those who will see them in their new sculpture forms.

About the inspirations to the art on boards: Most are related to some kind of story or idea, but not all of them. Some just simply, ‘exist’.

And about the places you Will never forget: Fernando de Noronha, Madeira (Portugal), Nova Zealand, Peru, e Kenya.

I have a lot of respect for a lot of people in all of these communications and obviously, like all of us, I am impacted by everything I have seen or heard since I was born - but my specific influences for the areas I am active in are not usually from other individuals in the same types of creation. My travels, friends and waves have pretty much inspired most of my music, art and writings. When I was a kid I used to read a lot of Beat Generation writers; Jack Keroauc, Ken Kasey etc…

I think my love for hip hop in an abstract way comes from these writers and the way they chose to ‘speak’ in a first-person narrative.  Hip hop is also usually written in the first-person, and seems to work relatively well with my stories and and type of voice.

About your conection with the Sea: It’s almost everything to me. I’m a huge fan of professional surfing and in general feel it’s a very positive thing, but surfing is much bigger than that for me. It’s really a kind of religion for a lot of us. It’s a way of life that would exist without contests, or surfwear or magazines. There are few ways to interact with nature closer than getting a good tube, it’s almost like being inside of the earth’s soul itself.If you surf in the cold, in the rain and alone – that’s when you know you really love the sea. And I definitely do.
