"Agora Recorded In Rio" (Público) Ithaka Darin Pappas

Excerpt from article by Vanessa Rato (Jornal Público, June 2004)
It was 1982 in Los Angeles, three high school classmates in their teens were trying their hand at a minor specialty of petty crime: Dine 'n' Dash.
They started by chance. One day, after a particularly long surfing session, they ended up eating together at a Chinese buffet where, in the end, no one seemed interested in receiving the bill. Twenty minutes later, they decided to leave without paying. Unexpectedly, no one followed them.
It could have been the beginning of a spiral toward the abyss of a juvenile detention center. And indeed it was, but only for one of them. Turns out, that would be another story. The point: three weeks after the Chinese buffet, always shaking sand from their feet and with water roaring in their ears, the group was repeating the feat of eating out for free daily and with honed technique. Until, at Bob's Big Boy, they crossed paths with a girl named "Rita." On the run. It's not easy to escape a waitress who's a former long-distance runner, especially when she's the kind of woman a teenager would actually prefer to be caught by—for the one whose trail is important here, it was the end of a career in crime, but, in compensation, the beginning of a love-until-something-does-us-part story and a step toward a career in the arts.
More than two decades have passed. It's with this snapshot of memory (in the first person and with plenty of what the British would call "guillotine humor") that "Recorded in Rio" begins, the fourth album by Ithaka (Ithaka Darin Pappas)—15 tracks of old-school hip-hop with forays into soul and an all-flavor mix of electro, blues, jazz, reggae, and Latin ambiances (Brazil and also Mexico) with a soundtrack echoing spoken word. Apparently, there's nothing to hide—it's the motto "live it, write it, rap it": "The artists I admire aren't even, perhaps, the ones with the best results. I'm interested in the process, so I like people who aren't afraid to expose themselves. The average person is so afraid to show themselves that we can know them for years without really knowing who they are," says "Fish Daddy" Ithaka Darin Pappas himself.
To illustrate the idea, he doesn't give an example, he mentions a true idol: "Look at Bukowski. You might think: that's shit! But it's his shit. It's absolutely honest work. That's the most important thing." (Absolutely reliable aside: in 1996 someone gave the writer's widow the song "Umbilibus" from the album "Flowers and the Color of Paint"; she liked it so much that when she learned Ithaka was a fan, she sent him a package with several books and a precious blue shirt still covered in wine stains - he never washed it, "so as not to lose his soul" and still wears it from time to time). in Portugal. It's 9:45 a.m. in mainland Portugal, eight hours earlier in California, meaning 2:45 a.m.—late for those who wake up at 7 a.m. to catch the empty beaches and the best waves. But that's not why, on the other end of the line, Ithaka drawls and slurs his words. He speaks like this, inwardly, as if mulling over what he's saying, with a coolness tempered by West Hollywood, Korea Town, the beaches of South Bay, and basically any hidden corner of the planet that comes to mind.
The term "globe-trotter" would be a good shortcut to describe his global wanderings, if it weren't for the fact that it suits him so poorly. Because, unlike those who allow themselves to be catapulted from place to place, with self-propelled engines on the verge of implosion, Ithaka likes to linger in the places he passes through. That's how he ended up staying in Lisbon for almost six years. For those who have forgotten: he arrived in 1992 and left only in 1998. In between, he released two albums, "Flowers and the Color of Paint" (1995) and "Stellafly" (1997), considered by some to be "the most powerful and consistent" national recordings of those years. Musically, among many other collaborations, he is also the lyricist & vocalist of the highly internationalized "So Get Up".

Ithaka "Escape From The City Of Angeles" ft. Marta Dias (Replacement Killers Soundtrack)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y21UrdTi2kI

* Ithaka "Escape From The City of Angels) featuring Marta Dias * Recorded at Namouche Studios - Lisbon, Portugal 1995 * Produced by: Joe Fossard -* Pre-production and samples by: Grizly * Bass: Francisco Rebelo * Trumpet: Nuno Reis -* Tenor Sax: Paulo Muiños * Lyrics: ©1995 Ithaka Darin Pappas (Ravenshark Music/ASCAP/North Music Group) People they ask me, Why the hell you wanna leave? Saying that they’ll miss me, that they’re gonna grieve This town is number one, we got the Lakers and the sun There’s always lots of lovelies, always lots of fun Why won’t you settle down and stay? Who in their right mind would ever leave LA? But I gotta tell you, got to put it straight Still’ve busted out of there busted down the gate Cuz, I had to get out while there was going to get LA was the hunter, California was the net So I got up, got off of my bucket Sometimes you gotta say, Well what the hell.? fck it! Wasn’t around for the riots of the King But every other night bullets left my ears to ring Hostility, the song that L.A. played Every single night and every single day Walking down the alley, the one behind my house Came five slang-bangers, it was me they were to roust They asked me, Where ya going?, said, Not really sure The next thirty-seconds I remembered in a blur 3x WANT TO GET OUT. HAD TO GET OUT. GOT OUT ESCAPE FROM THE CITY OF ANGELS I tried so hard for years to understand Why do you find such pleasure in killing another man? I prefer the simple highs in life Like a mountain of water, not cuttin’ with a knife But where I’ve disappeared ain’t confidential The sky’s still blue, the swells are monumental And no, I’m not ignoring my heritage Over the gap, I’m a building a bridge To learn once and for all that peace can exist Forgive, forget, bring down the fists 3x-WANT TO GET OUT. HAD TO GET OUT. GOT OUT ESCAPE FROM THE CITY OF ANGELS Five days later, what have I got? I’m in another place which is sunny and hot The difference here is that I’m free as a bird No gun to my head, no blood on the curb But just then a strange thought overtook my brain And since that day, it never felt the same If everybody just put down their arms To nobody on the planet could ever come harm 3x-WANT TO GET OUT. HAD TO GET OUT. GOT OUT ESCAPE FROM THE CITY OF ANGELS The people of this planet they want explanations For riots, earthquakes and all “God’s creations” You got me, I just couldn’t say I do what I do, I take it day by day 3x-WANT TO GET OUT. HAD TO GET OUT. GOT OUT ESCAPE FROM THE CITY OF ANGELS Well six weeks later, still don’t know what’s up Don’t got many friends, still got an empty cup They speak in tongues I don’t understand But I look just like ‘em, visually I blend It’s time to start it up in my new land Korvorowng’s one and only survival plan 3x-WANT TO GET OUT. HAD TO GET OUT. GOT OUT ESCAPE FROM THE CITY OF ANGELS It took me two years, but now I know for sure LA ain’t the enemy and goodness will endure The Seed of Free, my real need Was right there all the time inside of me Just a voyage of my mind is what I needed But now I’m on the other side and deep seeded LA to LAX in fourteen hours flat At home on two shores, but I ain’t living fat Still plagued by brokenness It doesn’t disappear when I say, hocus pocus But grounded for the moment in the city of Lisbon I’m looking for peace and I’m looking for wisdom Hooked up with a mastermind named, Grizzly Formed Ithaka, now we’re rolling busily 3x-WANT TO GET OUT. HAD TO GET OUT. GOT OUT ESCAPE FROM THE CITY OF ANGELS 3x-WANT TO GET OUT. HAD TO GET OUT. GOT OUT ESCAPE FROM THE CITY OF ANGELS 5x- ESCAPE FROM THE CITY OF ANGELS . . . . . . . . . . . . . Escape From The City Of Angels was recorded at Namouche Studios located in Lisbon, Portugal in 1995 and originally appeared on Ithaka's debut album Flowers And The Color Of Paint. The album was nominated for three Blitz Awards (the Portuguese equivalent of the Grammy) in the categories of: Best Album, Best New Project and Best Male Vocalist. And in an end-of-decade retrospective of national music, the prestigious newspaper Publico considered Flowers And The Color Of Paint to be one of the ten most influential 'Portuguese' albums of the 1990's. In 1997, acclaimed Hollywood director Antoine Fuqua used the song in the soundtrack for his feature film The Replacment Killers [released by Columbia Pictures] starring; Mira Sorvino (academy award winner) Chow Yun-fat (academy award nominee) and several other known actors such as Clifton Collins Jr. and Michael Rooker. Song meaning of "Escape From The City Of Angels" by Ithaka (Ithaka Darin Pappas)

The song Escape From The City Of Angels is a 1990's underground hip hop story-song about breaking away from the existence an individual is born into, both physically and mentally.

The protagonist of the track Korvorão (aka Ithaka) is feeling stifled by the gang violence in his native city of Los Angeles and is dreaming of leaving for a more idealistic place. Friends are confused why he would want to leave a city full of sunshine and pretty girls and is home to the Laker basketball team; People they ask me, Why the hell you wanna leave? Saying that they’ll miss me, that they’re gonna grieve. This town is Number One, we got the Lakers and the sun. There’s always lots of lovelies, always lots of fun. Why won’t you settle down and stay? Who in their right mind would ever leave LA?

As exemplified in these lines, our protagonist was mugged near his home;

Walking down the alley, the one behind my house. Came five slang-bangers, it was me they were to roust. They asked me, Where ya going?, said, Not really sure. The next thirty-seconds I remembered in a blur.

This only solidifies his resolve to leave his home and he decides to move to the European city of Lisbon, Portugal, with very little financial means, hoping to find a more peaceful and cleaner place. His departure is soon followed by the Rodney King riots leaving LA in turmoil;

Wasn’t around for the riots of the King. But every other night bullets left my ears to ring.

On the other side of the Atlantic Ocean, he finds Lisbon to be, another place which is sunny and hot, but with blue skies and better surfing waves; the sky's still blue, the swells are monumental. He instantly experiences a renewed sense of freedom in a place with significantly less violent crime, leaving him to contemplate why crime even exists at all; if everybody just put down their arms, to nobody on the planet could ever come harm.

After a two year period living oversees, Ithaka, has a change of heart about Los Angeles, discovering that it was his perception of his own reality and his home city that let to the feelings of oppression. This is evident in the lines;

It took me two years but now I know for sure,  L.A. ain't the enemy and goodness will endure. The Seed of Free, my real need, was right there all the time inside of me. Just a voyage of my mind is what I needed, but now I’m on the other side and deep seeded.

In a sense he has made peace with Los Angeles, and now considers both cities his hometowns as reflected in the lines;

LA to LX in fourteen hours flat, At home on two shores, but I ain’t living fat*. And the lines; Grounded for the moment in the city of Lisbon. I’m looking for peace and I’m looking for wisdom.

NThe word Fat in the line, At home on two shores, but I ain’t living fat. Is a reference to financial instability.

"I Ride" por Ithaka

A sua música, Escape From The City Of Angels, apareceu na banda sonora do longa-metragem da Columbia Pictures, The Replacement Killers.

Ithaka's "Lust The Power Supreme" art film/music video directed by João Paulo Simões

English Translation:

J.D. - In addition to these two projects, are you also involved as you mentioned a little while back, in the filming of the artist Ithaka's video clip "Lust - The Power Supreme"?
J.P.S. - Yes, "Ithaka" is the American hip hop project Ithaka Darin Pappas who lived in Lisbon forsix or seven years and even had a contract with Valentim de Carvalho (he released two albums here), however I think that one of the reasons that brought him to Portugal were the waves because he does surf. Here is another brilliant mind that expands through various areas. He is a brilliant photographer, he is a sculptor among other activities. When he left Portugal, he went to Los Angeles and then went to Brazil where he lives. At this moment he releases his own albums and he also controls and manages his own career. Along the way and as someone who grew up and lived in Los Angeles who is a culturally rich place, there are always very experienced and very good people to work with.
I met Ithaka Darin Pappas here in Portugal, even before going to England, it's been around for 15 years, and he's been following my career, all my progress and my professionalization, and we've always said that we would like to do things together. His work in my opinion transcends ordinary hip-hop, and he wanted me to film this particular subject because of what I already knew about my work and what he knows about the way I approach the issue of sensuality. The Ithaka as he is not afraid of any kind of controversy, which may come from the way I can film sensuality which is a subject in which he expresses various strands of lust in human relationships including the devouring of spirituality which in the end all of us we have, let me express freely. The theme is called "Lust - The Power Supreme" and I presented to him an idea with influences of Japanese comics (Manga), in terms of aesthetics, but filmed with real people, ideas of which he liked very much. The video was to focus on periods of a young woman's life and her evolution into the mature woman state where she would let her lust take over her life, within what is socially acceptable, but then I ended up (as I did in the past, for example for the project Sieben in the music video "He Can Delve In Hearts"), of approaching multiple personages in more or less connected segments and that in this case show several slopes of the lust. I can not fail to mention the presence in a part of this work of two fabulous Portuguese actresses, Sandra Rosado and Sara Belo among others. We started filming about a month ago and most of it is already done. Working with certain actors has been a very special process because in some cases I have worked with them in the past.
