Gabriel O Pensador and Ithaka "Who's The Enemy?" (remastered, 15th anniversary release)

Friends since 1993, the Ithaka Darin Pappas and Gabriel O Pensador first crossed paths in Lisbon, Portugal on a photoshoot for Super Som magazine (Editora Abril) at the time of Gabriel's first tor of Europe coinciding with his #1 Brazilian hit, Tô Feliz (Matei o Presidente). Ithaka ( a former photographer of N.W.A, in Los Angeles) made pictures of nineteen year old Gabriel in a wheel chair, he had broken his leg a few days before playing soccer. The unusual images of the young rap star in a full leg cast ended up that edition of the magazine's foldout poster.

Both surfers, The two became friends. Ithaka also began making music - and It was years later after he had visited Gabriel o Pensador and his family in Brazil, that Gabriel suggested to him the idea of recording an album there in Rio de Janeiro A couple of years later, after an introduction to a local producer was made, a new fifteen-track record finally began to materialize including their hip hop peace duet, Who's The Enemy?

Estava-se em 1982. A sete anos do fim da Guerra Fria, com George Bush pai na Casa Branca e ainda em plena demonização do espectro soviético, os Estados Unidos preparavam-se para a inauguração, em Washington, do mural de homenagem aos mortos do Vietname - 150 metros de granito preto para mais de 58 mil nomes, o balanço de uma das mais desastrosas opções da política externa norte-americana.
Em plena era de explosão informática, depois de Ronald Reagan e Lech Walesa, a revista "Time" escolhia como Pessoa do Ano nem mais nem menos que o computador pessoal da IBM. Era o ano de "E.T." e "Tootsie". Michael Jackson, em época de ouro, lançava "Thriller". Os Blondie atacavam com "The hunter" e os Clash com "Rock the Casbah". Entretanto, em Los Angeles, três colegas de liceu em plena adolescência testavam a mão numa especialidade menor do pequeno crime, o "Dine'n'Dash".
Começaram por acaso. Um dia, depois de uma sessão particularmente longa de "surf", acabaram a comer juntos num "buffet" chinês onde, no fim, ninguém parecia interessado em receber a conta. Vinte minutos de espera mais tarde, a opção foi sair sem pagar. Inesperadamente, ninguém os seguiu.
Poderia ter sido o princípio de uma espiral em direcção ao abismo de uma casa de correcção juvenil. E na verdade foi, mas apenas para um deles. Acontece que isso seria outra história. O que interessa: três semanas depois do "buffet" chinês, sempre a sacudir areia dos pés e com água a estalar nos ouvidos, o grupo estava a repetir a proeza de almoçar fora de graça a ritmo diário e com técnica apurada. Até que no Bob's Big Boy se cruzaram com uma rapariga chamada "Rita".

Não é fácil escapar a uma empregada de mesa que é ex-corredora de fundo, sobretudo quando ela é do tipo de mulher por quem, na verdade, um adolescente prefere mesmo deixar-se apanhar - para aquele a quem importa aqui seguir o rasto, foi o fim de uma carreira no crime, mas, em compensação, o princípio de uma história de amor-até-que-qualquer-coisa-nos-separe e um passo na direcção de um percurso nas artes.
Passaram-se mais de duas décadas. É com este recorte de memória (na primeira pessoa e com muito daquilo a que os britânicos chamariam "humor de guilhotina") que arranca "Recorded in Rio", o quarto álbum do projecto Ithaka - 15 faixas de hip-hop "old school" com incursões pela soul e um "todos-sabores" electro, blues, jazz, reggae e ambiências latinas (Brasil em fantasma, mas também México) com eco de banda sonora sobre "spoken word".
O CD (não, ainda não sabe quando nem por quem será lançado em Portugal, mas está garantido que sairá depois do lançamento nos EUA pela OP, da Warner) chegou por correio com carimbo californiano, mas não veio sozinho. A acompanhá-lo, um pormenorizadissimo dossier com tudo o que se possa querer saber sobre o "background" e processo evolutivo de cada um dos temas.
Aparentemente, não há nada a esconder - é o lema "live it, write it, rap it": "Os artistas que eu admiro não são sequer, se calhar, os que têm melhores resultados. Interessam-me os processos, por isso gosto de pessoas que não têm medo de se expor. A pessoa média tem tanto medo de se mostrar que a podemos conhecer durante anos sem realmente saber quem é", diz o próprio "Fish Daddy" Ithaka Darin Pappas.
Para ilustrar a ideia, não dá um exemplo, faz menção a um verdadeiro ídolo: "Veja-se o Bukowski. Pode-se pensar: é uma merda! Mas é a merda dele. É um trabalho absolutamente honesto. Isso é o mais importante."
(Aparte absolutamente fiável: em 1996 alguém deu a ouvir o tema "Umbilibus" de "Flowers and the Color of Paint" à viúva do escritor; ela gostou tanto que ao saber que Pappas era um fã lhe mandou um pacote com vários livros e uma preciosa camisa azul ainda cheia de nódoas de vinho - ele nunca a lavou, "para não perder a alma" e continua a vesti-la de vez em quando).
in Portugal. São 9h45 em Portugal continental, oito horas menos na California, ou seja, 2h45 - tarde para quem acorda às 7h para apanhar as praias vazias e as melhores ondas. Mas não é por isso que, do outro lado da linha, Pappas arrasta a voz e enrola as palavras. Ele fala assim, para dentro, como quem rumina o que diz, numa "coolness" temperada entre West Hollywood, Korea Town, as praias de South Bay e, basicamente, qualquer canto recôndito do planeta que venha à memória.
O termo "globe-trotter" seria um bom atalho para falar das suas deambulações mundiais, não fosse dar-se o caso de lhe ficar tão mal. É que, contrariamente àqueles que se deixam catapultar de lugar em lugar, com motor de auto-propulsão à beira da implosão, Pappas gosta de se demorar nos sítios por onde passa. Foi assim que acabou por ficar por Lisboa quase seis anos.
Para os mais esquecidos: a chegada foi em 1992 e a partida só em 98, pelo meio ficaram dois álbuns, "Flowers and the Color of Paint" (1995) e "Stellafly" (97), considerado por alguns como "o mais poderoso e consistente" registo nacional desse ano. Em termos musicais, entre muitas outras colaborações, ficou ainda a letra do internacionalizadíssimo "So get up" para os Underground Sound of Lisbon.
É o lado público. Há o privado: a aterragem com 70 dólares no bolso e o contacto de um obscuro advogado norte-americano a precisar de ver recuperada uma casa centenária no Bairro Alto.
"Em termos musicais, a minha vida artística nasceu em Portugal. Nunca tinha falado para um microfone. Na verdade, nunca tinha sequer visto o interior de um estúdio de gravação", diz Pappas. Fotógrafo e escultor, o músico-por-vir foi vivendo uma sucessão de "acidentes", em geral felizes.
Os encontros com General D, Boss AC, Yen Sung, Pedro Passos. "Ganzas", Super Bock e caldo verde. Está tudo em "Recorded in Rio": depois de "Dine'N'Dash" damos um salto de dez anos (que passa por cima de 18 meses em Tóquio) e, no segundo tema, "...in Portugal", o álbum de memórias abre-se no capítulo nacional. É um tributo "à minha segunda casa". O tom é nostálgico e a batida funk.
Não será o tema mais forte do álbum, mas isso é pouco relevante: tal como o anterior "Somewhere South of Somalia" (2001) - com o produtor-engenheiro Conley "Conman" Abrams (TuPac, Queen Latifa, Snoop Doggy Dog), que conta as então recentes aventuras na África Oriental -, "Recorded in Rio" é também mais um diário a viver página a página que uma cruzada pelo tema "punch". E tal como esse último, "Recorded..." é, como já se poderá ter adivinhado pelo seu título, fruto de (mais) uma etapa de viagens. A consequência: todo um novo conjunto de colaborações.
Sem rodeios: "Prefiro não ver as mesmas caras todos os dias", diz Pappas em "Technically a Failure" - "I split. Escape. Evaporate". O exagero é artístico, mas na "vida real" o tema do escapismo "beat" versão "remastered" persiste: "Não quero repetir experiências. Não imagino gravar num mesmo estúdio. O desconhecido traz uma energia muito particular, muito inspiradora."
Gabriel o Pensador era um amigo já dos tempos de Portugal e em 2001 a passagem por sua casa tinha contornos de viagem de lazer. Só que quando somos uma pequena máquina de produção independente e em auto-gestão a vida não se compartimenta de forma estanque.
"Nessa altura conheci muita gente e uma das coisas que mais me impressionou foi a maneira como no Brasil as pessoas ainda fazem as coisas por amor. Nada como em L.A., onde tudo é altamente profissionalizado."
Os colaboradores de ocasião foram aparecendo, quase por acaso, pelas instalações do estúdio Monoaural. E foram ficando: o próprio Grabriel o Pensador, Bnegão (Planet Hemp), a actriz e cantora Thalma de Freitas, os baixistas Liminha (Os Mutantes) e Alberto Continentino (Ed Motta), Pepe Cisneros (um "transplante cubano para o Rio), o baterista Cézar "Bodão" Farias (Lulu Santos e Fernanda Abreu), o teclista Claudinho Andrade (Gilberto Gil)...
A produção no Brasil ficou a cargo de Berna Cappas e em Los Angeles, de novo com Conley Abrams.
Foram quatro meses de trabalho de grupo a juntar aos outros quatro que Pappas já tinha passado a trabalhar a solo na Califórnia. Depois do assombrado "Muerto escondido", o terceiro tema do álbum, sobre uma passagem negra por Puerto Escondido, no México, onde "men walk on water e zombies walk the streets", o quarto tema fala dessa experiência brasileira: é uma adaptação do tema "Umbilibus" de "Flowers and The Color of Paint" (1995), uma rábula sobre artistas que aos 37 anos e com quatro álbuns, continuam a ter que andar de autocarro, mesmo no Brasil: "Yeah, right here on the mothafucking bus".

Saltwater Nomad

Ithaka’s travels have inspired albums, poems and stories. “Seabra is Mad” – one of the songs of the year in 1997 according to the newspaper Público is a theme of the surfing film Chasing The Lotus (2006) by Gregory Schelle – the result of a experimental surfing trip to the waves of Madeira with Portuguese big rider José Seabra, who one fine day went straight into the water while still an unknown. Somewhere South of Somalia, for example, is an album inspired by a two-month trip to East Africa. “I’m a storyteller and my music shows that, as do my articles [Ithaka has published fiction about surfing in specialist magazines like Surfer, Transworld Surf, Fluir and Surf Portugal]”.

After Portugal, Ithaka visited Brazil on the invitation of rapper (and surfer) Gabriel o Pensador. Recorded in Rio is one of two albums made in Rio de Janeiro. But his relationship with Brazil did not end there. Today, it is here, or more specifically the southern coast of São Paulo, that this multidisciplinary artist spends most of the year. His little hideaway, which he calls Akahtilândia, is surrounded by tropical rainforest and has good waves and deserted beaches to hand. Far from anywhere and anyone except himself, at Akahtilândia Ithaka continues to do what he likes most. He has recorded an album – Voiceless Blue Raven – and has not stopped sculpting, surfing, or taking photographs: “Did you know that I have photographed several insects I have never found in any encyclopedia?”

Art, music, photography. None is stronger than the other. “I am involved with all of them at the same time. They are multiple facets that define me not as an artist, but as a human being”. And travelling: “I love multiple realities! They make my world more colourful. I love the state of being between many worlds and between many careers. I’m a hybrid”.

The Chinese philosopher, Confucius once said that a wise man doesn't feel the need to differentiate between work or hobby. And more importantly he doesn't feel the need to reveal to others whether or not he is working or playing.

Observing from distance at the effortless way the multi-artistic Ithaka (aka Darin Pappas) traverses at ease between all of his chosen mediums of expression; [music, sculpture, writing and photography] it appears his life's journey is a soulful balancing act somewhere between the worlds of euphoric creation and aquatic diversion. But on closer inspection, looking at the expertise and attention to detail of any Ithaka project, it becomes evident the man is getting down to first-degree serious business, even if he himself isn't aware of it.

Born in southern California, the hip hop visionary and visual expressionist spent his early youth surfing LA and Orange Counties, but soon began his global wanderings - not only in pursuit of higher quality waves but of profound cultural experiences, both shore side and deep in the cities. For Ithaka, marriage of surf and street comes naturally.

After long blocks of time in Greece, Japan and other exotic locales, Ith arrived in Portugal in July of 1992 with a surfboard, wetsuit, Nikon FE camera and very little else. In addition to sampling the region's wealth of epic surf and making friends, he started exhibiting his photographs, creating new sculptures, publishing his short stories, and even began working as a radio host on a national music program. He left the region six years later with two studio albums under his belt and nine Portuguese Grammy nominations. An unlikely place to start an international music career, but Ithaka has not only been influenced by his many Siddharthian journeys, he has become a product of them. And he doesn't exactly reinvent himself at each intercontinental stop along the path, he merely keeps adding layers, carpet-bagging along the way newly learned skills and infinite wealth of mental archeology, the bases for most of his songs, stories and visuals. But even though global as they come as a human being, artist and surfer, he'll be the first to tell you it's not necessary to go far away to get away. He says,

It's all about perception.
How you look at things.
How you absorb things.
Some of the wisest
and most interesting people
I've ever met have barely even
left their home state.
It¹s about breaking routine

And breaking routine is what Ithaka and his bag of tricks is all about. In contrast to his last audio work, Recorded in Rio (a melodic, mostly live-instrument hip hop album released in 2004), the new cd, SALTWATER NOMAD, his fifth full-length, goes to the polar opposite and is largely an electronic production. Recorded in Brazil with producer Tito Gomes, the two serve up twelve clean, bumping, minimalist hip hop story-songs.

Vocal-wise, Ithaka's fluid punctuality can be considered in outstanding company like Everlast, Michael Franti and the late Tupac. And although sonically, Saltwater Nomad will be considered a pop/rap record, lyrically don't expect generic Pimp & Ho/22"-rim/gansta-stylin' references. Ith successfully personalizes the genre, using it as a soundtrack for his straight-up, no bullshit, autobiographical story-telling, walking new ground across subjects like spirituality, global politics, nostalgia, lust, immigration, positive thinking, diabolic roommates (comedy), the intricate complexities of long lasting boy/girl unity and his passion of choice, wave-riding. All scribed with the Ithman's patented crafty, post-Beat Generation urban lyricism.

Breaking routine is what Ithaka and his bag of tricks is all about.

Written & recorded in late 2003 to protest tthe wartime antics of U.S. President George W. Bush and other self-proclaimed ‘super heroes’, Californian hip hop artist and poet, Ithaka, teamed up with Brazilian superstar Gabriel O Pensador for a true collaborative meeting of the minds.
Ithaka adapted the lyrics of one of his early songs, Erase The Slate Of Hate (from the album, Flowers And The Color Of Paint) to mesh with the Gabriel O Pensador’s additional verses.
Musically, the song was pre-produced by Ithaka in Los Angeles, who later worked it at Studio Monoaural in Rio De Janeiro, Brazil (Gabriel O Pensador’s hometown).
Note: The world renowned musician and producer, Liminha (from the Brazilian group, Os Mutantes) played the bass on this track.

O hip hop salgado de Ithaka

Músico e artista californiano Ithaka lança no Brasil o disco Fishdaddy Flashbacks.

O músico e artista californiano Ithaka acaba de lançar o disco Fishdaddy Flashbacks.

Além de composições inéditas, o álbum do surfista traz uma coletânea de músicas que vão desde o seu início de carreira, em 1995, até os dias de hoje.

Nascido no Sul da Califórnia, com descendência grega, Ithaka viveu em várias partes do mundo (Japão, Portugal, Grécia, entre outros) sempre à procura de ondas e riqueza cultural.

Radicado no Rio de Janeiro, ele escolheu o Leblon para morar e é presença certa sempre que há ondas no Pontão.

As músicas trazem versos baseados em suas experiências de vida, cantados por sua voz forte e imponente.

Marcou presença na trilha-sonora de “Second Thoughts”, de Timmy Turner, e Samba Trance & Rock n’ Roll, do premiado videomaker brasileiro Rafael Mellin.

Sua canção “Escape from the City of Angels” embalou um filme considerado sucesso em Hollywood, “Replacement Killers” (Assassinos Substitutos).

Ithaka ainda trabalhou com feras em sua trajetória musical como os produtores Conley Abrams (Snoop Dog e Tupac Shakur) e Mario Caldato (Beastie Boys e Marcelo D2). No Brasil, gravou com vários destaques do cenário nacional, como B-Negão (ex-Planet Hemp); Gabriel (O Pensador); Liminha (de Os Mutantes), e Thalma de Freitas, da Orquestra Imperial, além de lançar em 2007 o CD “Saltwater Nomad”.

Qual a influência do surf neste disco?

As canções I Ride e Substance-Free Exile tratam de surf, mas foram escritas com uma linguagem de rua. Entretanto, quem não entende do esporte não tem ideia sobre o que estou falando.

Eu descrevo o surf como se estivesse descrevendo o corpo de uma mulher, como se fosse uma droga que vicia.

Quais foram suas inspirações na música?

Nas letras me inspiro nas viagens que faço, no surf, nos amigos e nas pessoas que conheço pelo mundo. A maioria das minhas músicas conta histórias.

Tem alguma música do CD que você prefere?

A música Escape From The City Of Angels, que foi utilizada no filme Assassinos Substitutos, é uma das que eu mais gosto.

Na maioria das vezes você não consegue fazer músicas mágicas, mas às vezes elas simplesmente acontecem. Eu escrevi a letra no avião, quando me mudei da Califórnia para a Europa. Liricamente ela é única, tem uma batida sólida, baixo, trompetes e uma vocalista incrível.
